Officials in Tasmania are striving to determine a rosy sludge that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a portion of Randalls Bay about 60km south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples have been collected and provided to the environmental agency for analysis. A spokesperson stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in response to variations in nutrients, heat, precipitation or sunlight".
"The events are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can turn the water reddish," the spokesperson noted. "Only some algae outbreaks are harmful, with numerous types serving as a primary source of food for marine life in the marine food web."
"The primary reason of crimson tides in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can create bioluminescent light displays at night."
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their occurrence has increased in recent years, partially due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that join together to create mineral-filled seas primed for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically function as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their populations that disrupts the normal functioning of aquatic systems.
These events have been equated with underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as conditions are ripe. In more extreme scenarios, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as marine life is eliminated or suffocated, offering more food for the bloom.
South Australia not long ago dealt with a devastating algae outbreak along its southern shore after a series of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across an extensive zone. The event resulted in surfers with irritated eyes and severe coughing and may have killed up to 250,000 marine animals across numerous types, according to government calculations.
An estuarine ecologist, who helped investigate the beginning of South Australia's outbreak stated, based on photos of the current situation, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".
"We have seen numerous of these blooms around Tasmania of late," she said.
The scientist explained this organism did not create poisons like the organism involved in that devastating event, but it does eat small invertebrates and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of this algae after a outbreak of a different species, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she added.
Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, stated it appeared the suspected bloom had "increased notably" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, citing like situations overseas.

An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist describing the event as an "ecological crisis" and urging the government head to visit and "assume command the effort that authorities must be making".
"Officials needs to realize this is a disaster in the unfolding, commercially as well as for nature."
Addressing the media, the premier said he was not aware of any links between the event and the aquaculture sector, emphasizing scientific testing was necessary before conclusions could be made.
"We must make certain our rivers and seas are safe for nature and viable," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across Tasmania are our assets and we need to guarantee the community and our industry can operate side-by-side to enjoy our waterways productively and sustainably."
